The agitating farmers under the aegis of Kisan Kranti Morcha (KKM), on the second day of the strike, has given a call for Maharashtra bandh excluding Mumbai on June 5. However, the essential commodities have been excluded from the proposed bandh. The decision in this regard was taken at the KKM’s core committee meeting held today at Puntamba in Ahmednagar district.

The core committee member Jayaji Suryavanshi told DNA said the farmers will down shutters of all government offices across the state except Mumbai on June 6. Further, farmers will not allow on June 7 the movement of BJP ministers, MPs and legislators in the state . ‘’The strike could have been avoided, had the state government acted on our demands including complete loan waiver, implementation of Swaminathan Commission report, introduction of pension scheme for farmers among others. Our appeal to the citizens of Maharashtra is to  extend their support for a day to the agitating farmers,’’ he said.

Suryavanshi said the core committee has accepted the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ call for a dialogue and will meet him tonight. However, there cannot be any compromise on demand for a total crop loan waiver.

Farmers in large number on the second day of strike today hit the roads in various parts of the state to press their demands. Functioning of wholesale markets and agricultural produce marketing committee were severely impacted due to less arrival of fruits and vegetables. Similarly, farmers did not contribute milk at the collection centres.

Already prices of vegetables have witnessed surge and the vendors say if the strike continues prices will further increase for want of sufficient supply.

Meanwhile, the anti corruption crusader Anna Hazare has offered to hold talks on behalf of the agitating farmers with the BJP led government in Maharashtra. He has extended his support to the farmers strike, which entered second day today crippling the supply of milk, fruits and vegetables in Mumbai and other cities.

Hazare said the farmers have spontaneously launched the agitation due to lack of response from the state government. Farmers have run out of patience and taken law into their hands. ‘’I have already held talks twice with the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and I am prepared to mediate. The government needs to sympathetically look at the issues faced by the farming community and act for its redressal.’’
