Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have reportedly stepped up their operations to flush out terrorists from the safe havens of south Kashmir after the killing of Lt Ummer Fayaz. Lt Fayaz, an army officer, was kidnapped from a family wedding while he was on leave and killed in the Shopian district of Kashmir.

Security forces have, in the last 24 hours, launched two massive Cordon and Search Operations (CASO) in south Kashmir. One of the CASO was conducted on Monday in the Okay Pora village of J&K's Kulgam district. The village was cordoned off and a thorough house-to-house search was carried out by the search team. However, no one has been arrested or neutralised in these operations so far.

"It (CASOs) is a regular feature. On an average, we conduct two to three CASOs per day. It is a part of our strategy. Whenever we get information (about terrorists) we conduct a or sometimes multiple CASOs," Shridhar Patil, Superintendent of Police, Kulgam, told DNA.

The enhanced operations have come three days after General Officer Commanding (GoC) Victor Force Major General BS Raju condemned Lieutenant Fayaz's death and said that they will take action against the terrorists responsible for the dastardly act.

"The action will take place very soon and it will be on our terms," Major General Raju had said after meeting Lt Fayaz's family on May 13.

Official figures reveal that there are more than 200 terrorists operating in the Valley, of which 110 are locals and rest are foreign nationals, mostly from Pakistan. 95 terrorists are new recruits, who joined various terrorist organisations operating in Jammu and Kashmir in 2016. More than 100 terrorists are active in the south Kashmir region alone.

"We have been conducting such CASOs on an everyday basis. We must have conducted at least 300 CASOs in the last six months. Baring two incidents of stone pelting, the operations have been conducted smoothly," Patil said.

"We have changed our strategy and have geared up. I can assure you that within two to three months it (south Kashmir) will be cleared (of terrorists)," he added.
