After exam stress comes a pressure of another kind: admission. Doctors say they have been observing a rise in admission stress among parents and students. Given the extremely competitive environment for getting admission in reputable colleges, choosing the right course and so on, the spike in the number of stressed parents and students seeking help from psychiatrists is not entirely unexpected.
Dr Parul Tank, psychiatrist at Fortis Hospital, said, "Every year, we counsel worried parents and their children. They are stressed with what field their child should choose. Children are confused and stressed too as they have to part ways with their friends."

The common fears of a parent are worthy percentage, admission in well-known colleges and the right choice of career.

Psychiatrist Dr Anjali Chabbria said, "Children mostly stress whether they will get admission in a reputable college. If any child says that they have not got a good college, then parents should tell them that they should do something that shows their college in good light."

Students are usually stressed during FYJC admission process when they have to put more than 30 colleges as options in the online admission form as part of the procedure. That includes not just popular colleges in the city, but even colleges that they have not heard of.

Dr Harish Shetty, psychiatrist at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, said, "One should not go for the brand of college and go for one which is the nearest. We suggest parents to choose a stream for their child in consultation with the counsellor. An aptitude test also helps."

Shetty said that parents shouldn't panic about seats and SSC marks. "Everyone will get a seat. One should see SSC marks as a practice match and not a test match. Parents should spend time with their children and guide them."
