Hours after the results of the UK referendum was declared, in which the country chose to leave the European Union, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said he would like a similar referendum for the statehood of Delhi. "After UK referendum, delhi will soon have a referendum on full statehood,"the chief minister tweeted.

Ever since he came to power, Kejriwal has been pushing for a referendum in Delhi to decide on the capital's statehood. Delhi's currently has a special status, where it has powers similar to that of an union territory, but with an assembly. Important departments like as the police and land are under the Centre's jurisdiction --issues which have repeatedly led to clashes between the AAP government and the Centre represented by lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung.

The AAP government has recently put up a draft statehoof bill on its website and invited suggestions and objections from the public.

The BJP and the Congress too had favoured full statehood for Delhi in the past.

The NDA government in 2003 had brought a bill to grant full statehood to Delhi and it was tabled in Parliament. However, there was no further development on that.
