After action-packed week, Justice Khehar retires

After an action packed week, Friday was Chief Justice of India (CJI) JS Khehar's last working day. Though he officially retires on Sunday, a day before his 65th birthday, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) decided to bid him farewell on Friday.

CJI Khehar, who was appointed as the 44th Chief Justice had a short, but eventful tenure lasting eight months. Though, the CJI's last week in office will remain to be the most striking and noteworthy for a long time to come.

As a parting gift to the country, CJI Khehar delivered two noteworthy and important judgments. The top court in a majority 3:2 judgement struck down the Muslim practice of instant triple talaq, and merely two days later delivered the historic and unanimous verdict according privacy as a fundamental right.

Speaking at his farewell on Friday, CJI Khehar took the opportunity to remember and thank the country, his family — particularly his father — the staff and the lawyers.

"I served my country in the manner of discharging a debt, I thank my country for giving me that opportunity," Khehar said.

Though the evening was marked with power cuts and rains, a large crowd turned up to bid Khehar adieu in the top court lawns.

Chief Justice of India designate Dipak Misra, Attorney General KK Venugopal, and SCBA office bearers RS Suri, Ajit Sinha and Gaurav Bhatia were also present at the occasion.

Venugopal hailed the outgoing CJI and lauded his efforts. "We are losing an outstanding judge of integrity". Though, immediately after Venugopal quipped, "A little bird told me that we may not lose him (Khehar) after all. He may return back to us in a different avatar."

"He touches you and you become energetic..that's Justice Khehar for you," CJI Khehar's successor Justice Misra said rising to the occasion.

SCBA office bearers Suri and Sinha, also spoke in support of Khehar, his commitment and contribution towards the bar.
