Following the brutal murder of Md Afrazul Khan in Rajasthan, West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to Chief Minister Mamata Benerjee, seeking setting up of liaison offices in different states to protect the interests of people from Bengal working there.

Talking about the plight and helplessness of people from Bengal who have to travel to other states for work, Chowdhury in his letter said, “In the prevailing circumstances, it is incumbent on your part to immediately set up (Bangla Sathi) liaison offices in different states to protect the interests of the people of Bengal who are based outside the states. This office needs to set up to take care of the imminent needs of persons who are staying and working outside Bengal.”

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leaders have blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the death of the migrant labour er in Rajasthan.

“It is an inhuman attack and it is all because of the macabre dance of death which the BJP has started,” West Bengal urban development minister Firhad Hakim said.

In a more aggressive tone, TMC district president for Birbhum, Anubrata Mondal said, “Is it possible that such a heinous crime take place in Bengal? Had it been here I would have burnt the offender alive.”

Afrazul, a native of Malda in West Bengal, was burnt alive in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district and video of the gruesome incident was uploaded on social media.

Banerjee has announced Rs 3 lakh compensation and a government job to the family of Afrazul.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh termed the monetary help as appeasement.

“If their concern was for the death of a minority member, then there had been several minority deaths in Bengal. How many have the state paid compensation to? The idea is to appease Muslims here. Besides, why are people of Bengal going to other places looking for a job? If there were enough jobs here they would not have left the state and incidents like these would not have happened at all,” Ghosh said.

Hakim, refuting allegations of Ghosh, said that it was the question of the death of a person, not any community.

“There is no question of appeasement of any group. It is the BJP people who are busy dividing society into minority and majority. We are sensitive towards any death,” he said.
