It was no laughing matter for actor-comedian Vir Das when he nearly got evicted from his rented posh Pali Hill apartment in Mumbai. The problem arose when Das rubbed the housing society the wrong way by holding up repair work.

According to a TOI report, residents of Neptune building where Das lives, decided to renovate the seven-storied building a couple of months back. They were eager to finish it before the onset of monsoon. Some part of the work was to be done in Das' four-bedroom flat on the fourth floor, which he has rented. According to reports, part of the balcony of Vir Das' flat had earlier collapsed. When the renovation work started, Das was in the US for six weeks and other members of society allege that he refused to allow any work to begin before he returned. He gave the reasoning that his wife would be alone at home.

However, when work was stalled even after his return, reportedly due to his dog's dust allergy, the other 20-odd families put their foot down and asked Das to vacate his flat if he was unwilling to co-operate.

According to a chairman of the society, Das could have easily kept his dog in one of the rooms and was resorting to 'unreasonable demands'. After receiving a stern warning, Das allowed the renovation work to be done. The daily quoted Das as saying that the issue has been resolved, and that he was only batting for his rights as a tenant. He said that tenants and their pets were not treated well by societies and it was time for them to assert their rights.
