Prime minister Narendra Modi's coming into power has resulted in a huge boost to usage of Hindi language. And now it seems 'ache din' are here for Sanskrit as well which is often touted as the mother of all Indian languages. Doordarshan News is now planning to have a weekly half hour special Sanskrit Bulletin which has been a long pending demand of Sanskrit lovers.

The decision is also a result of success that DD news achieved after it telecasted a special half hour bulletin it had on August , 2014 on the occasion of the Sanskrit Week 2014.

"It is not that we don't have a Sanskrit bulletin right now but it is only five minutes long but we got very good response to a 30 minute special Sanskrit bulletin that was broadcast in August. Thus we thought why not make it a weekly affair," a senior funcitonary of the Doordarshan News while wishing anonymity told dna.

"Also there has been a long pending demand for it. That is why we have taken this decision and soon this special weekly Sanskrit bulletin would be launched. It would most probably be on Sunday. It is initially expected to mainly have news and weekly round ups but later more features can be added," the senior DD news functionary said.

The officials believe continuation of it and addition of more features or more programmes in Sanskrit would entirely depend on the response they would recieve from people.

The officials, however, are expecting a huge interest as they feel there are enough people in the country today who are interested in Sanskrit as a language and thus would lap up a programme entirely based on it.

The plan for special Sanskrit bulletin is part of the DD News's revamp plan and compete with other channels. DDs director general (news) Archana Datta said: "We are the only channel in Hindi, English, Urdu and Sanskrit and we want to include variety of programmes."

DD news already has a daily five minute news bulletin in Sanskrit which has been continuing for over 15 years now. But there has been demand for several quarters to increase the time and have more special programmes in Sanskrit.

Last month, an online petition was also started by Himanshu Pota (who is also a founder of popular online forum 'learn sanskrit') to increase the timing of Sanskrit news on DD news and All India Radio (AIR).
"The Sanskrit used by the Sanskrit bulletins is world class and understood by every one who knows at least one Indian language. Each news bulletin provides tremendous joy and education to each of its listeners. It is one news bulletin each and every Indian can watch together and enjoy," said the online petition while demanding increase in timing of news bulletin both by AIR and DD news.
