As the Aam Aadmi Party failed to repeat its stellar performance of Delhi assembly elections in Delhi's civic body by-polls, the Congress regained some lost ground in the capital, as it wrested four of the 13 seats contested from the BJP-dominated MCD.
The results come as a relief for Congress, more because the exit polls on Monday predicted poor results for the party in the different state elections.
The exit polls indicates that the party is set to lose Assam to the BJP and Kerala to the Left. Its only hope is in Tamil Nadu, where it has an alliance with the DMK, the party given the best chance of winning.
The AAP, which had a spectacular win in the Delhi elections by gaining 67 of the 70 seats, however, managed to make a debut in the MCD by winning five seats in the MCD by-polls held on Sunday, leaving the BJP with only three seats of the 272-member civic body.
Earlier the BJP was holding seven of the seats and was ruling MCD for almost a decade. The rest were being held by independent candidates. The MCD was trifurcated in 2012 and has been ruled by the BJP for nearly a decade.
An independent who won is also likely to join the Congress.
While Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated and thanked Delhi for winning the maximum seats in the by-polls, and exuded confidence for winning the maximum seats in the MCD polls next year, his party members said AAP was hoping to get more seats. "We will analyse where we fell short," a senior AAP leader said.
Congress' Delhi unit chief Ajay Maken said that the party's traditional voters are returning to its fold in the city.
"The traditional Congress voters including safai karamcharis, street vendors and slum dwellers have returned to the Congress fold," Maken said.
