At least 100 Maoists, including women, lay siege to Dhanbad-Patna intercity Express near Patna. Five RPF personnel on board the train and the Maoists exchange fire; a jawan and two passengers die, five others sustain injuries. Maoists snatch an AK-47 rifle and two rifles from the RPF men. 90 minutes into the siege, 200 CRPF and GRP personnel are pressed into service, forcing the Maoists to retreat into the forest. The incident happened when the intercity express left Jamui station about 180 km from Patna.

Maoists killed senior Congress tribal leader Mahendra Karma in one of the biggest strikes in Chhattisgarh. Twenty-four others were also killed. Pradesh Congress Committee president Nandkumar Patel and his son were abducted. Police sources said Maoists ambushed the convoy of Congress's Parivartan rally in Sukma district in Chhattisgarh while it was on the Dharba Ghat-Tongpal section on the Jagdalpur highway. They first triggered an IED blast to disrupt the convoy and then fired at the vehicles. Senior Congress leader and former Union cabinet minister Vidya Charan Shukla was in a critical condition after being hit by three bullets. He died on June 11, 2013.
