7 Karnataka students, prof drown off Wayri beach

What was meant to be a summer beach outing in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district became a day of multiple tragedies for a group of college students and professors from Belgaum in Karnataka, when seven students and an assistant professor drowned while taking a dip during high tide.

The accident occurred at Malvan’s Wayri beach, where a group of 45 students and two professors from the Maratha Mandal Engineering College (MMEC) in Belgaum had gone for a two-day picnic. The deceased have been identified as Majumin Hanikar, Kiran Khandekar, Aarti Chavan, Avdhoot Tahshildar, Nitin Mutnadkar, Karuna Berde, Maya Kolhe, and Assistant Professor Mahesh Kujdarkar

According to Malvan police, the incident took place around 10:30 am when 10 students had ventured 15 to 20 feet into the sea. Since it high tide, the sand shifted from under their feet and the water level increased suddenly, pulling them under.
