Mahi was just three-and-half-years-old when her brother, Moksh, began taking chess lessons from coach, Pradip Brahmbhatt. She would watch him keenly and was clearly a fast learner because today, at the age of six, Mahi Amit Doshi has become a Fide rating (standard) player.

According to Gujarat State Chess Association, she is currently the youngest rated player on the Asian continent.

“I don’t know about the past but going by the current ratings, she is the youngest. It is a big achievement for Gujarat,” said Bhavesh Patel, secretary of Gujarat State Chess Association.

Gujarat’s first grandmaster, Tejas Bakre, also showered praise on the kid prodigy. “I don’t know whether she is the youngest or not but going by her age, it is a big achievement. Not many in Gujarat have been able to achieve this,” said Bakre. The Fide rating comes with a bonanza for the student of Delight Public School. The rating allows a player play against top players in the ranking tournaments.

“It helps improve rankings. Considering her age category, top seeding will give her psychological advantage over other players. That increases her chances of winning a tournament in her age category,” Bakre said. This will also allow her to bag the titles [IM and GM] at very young age, he added.

Mahi practices for 8-9 hours every day. Her brother, Moksh (1477 Fide ratings) has been a source of constant encouragement.

However, her parents are in no hurry and they don’t want to put undue pressure on their child. Their immediate target is the upcoming U-7 national championships at Pune in May.

“Certainly our goals are higher. This is the first step towards it. We would like her to bag all the titles in the game but, as of now, our sights are set on the national, continental and world championships in her age section,” said Brahmbhatt.

Interestingly, the Doshis belong to Khambhat and had shifted to Ahmedabad for Mahi and Moksh. Mahi’s father, Amit Doshi, is a doctor, shuttles between Khambat and Ahmedabad.

“Our decision to settle down in Ahmedabad is purely for our children who were doing well in chess. Our decision has paid off and Mahi has made us proud parents today,” said Mukti, mother of the two chess masters.

Currently, Guj girl Mahi Doshi is youngest rated player of Asia
