5.4 magnitude quake hits Andaman and Nicobar Islands

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 in the richter scale hit the Andaman Island region at about 2.45 PM today.

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 in the richter scale hit the Andaman Island region at about 2.45 PM today.

The epicentre of the earthquake is reported to be 135km south-west of Port Blair. 

The depth of the earthquake was measured as 10 km.

Speaking to ANI, JL Gautam, Director of Seismology Department said, "It has nothing got to do with Nepal Earthquake, it occurred in active seismic zone."

Gautam further said, "Earthquake of moderate intensity measuring 5.4 on Richter scale was felt in Andaman Islands region at 2.29 pm."

Reports of damage to properties or life have not been received so far, it said.

The earthquake comes within a week of the high intensity quake that hit Nepal and adjoining areas including parts of India last Saturday.
