Behind India's war on terror lies a humane approach to wean away the local youth from the clutches of militancy and facilitate their home-coming.

More than 32 youth have been quietly weaned away from militancy by Jammu and Kashmir police and reunited with their families in the last one year. "We want the children to realize the futility of picking up the guns," SP Vaid, Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir told DNA.

Danish Ahmed, a B.Sc forestry (third-year) student at Doon P.G. College of Agriculture Science and Technology, Dehradun, is the latest in the series to give up arms.

Danish had hogged the limelight after his video wearing battle pouch with a grenade during the funeral of Hizbul commander Sabzar Bhat became viral on social media. During investigation, police identified him as Danish Ahmed of Kulangam-Handwara in north Kashmir.

Police said Danish was found involved in stone-pelting incidents in Handwara in 2016 unrest also. He was even detained by the police but let off after counselling considering his career.

Police said once it was learnt that Danish has joined militancy, cops and 21 Rashtriya Riffles of the Army got in touch with his parents and impressed upon them to counsel their son to surrender.

Police said his parents were convinced that if he surrenders, he would be dealt with fairly under law. Efforts made by security forces yielded results and Danish surrendered before Handwara police and 21 RR.

On being questioned, he revealed that he was in touch with terrorists of south Kashmir region on social media sites, and it was on their instigation that he had decided to become a terrorist.

"He came into the contact of Hizbul handler through social media. He later facilitated him to join Hizbul. Hailing from Tral (the hometown of Burhan Wani) the Hizb handler had befriended him and motivated him to join the outfit," said Ghulam Jeelani, Senior Superitendent of Police, Handwara.

Police said Danish was tasked by Hizbul Mujahideen commanders to 'activate' some local youth in North Kashmir and make the region as militancy infested as southern part of Kashmir. "However, after spending a few days with the terrorists in South Kashmir, he realized the futility of joining militant ranks," said a police spokesman.

Police have registered a case under section 7/25 Arms Act stands registered in Police Station Handwara. "Investigation is on. Danish is being considered under the J&K Surrendered Militants Rehabilitation Policy", he said.

This is the second time in the last 15 days when a local youth has brought from the jaws of militancy and reunited with the family. A B.Com student who had gone missing and later appeared on social media brandishing AK 47 too was successfully weaned away from militancy by the police.

Official figures reveal that there are more than 200 terrorists operating in the valley, of which 110 are locals and rest from outside, mostly from Pakistan. Ninety five ultras are new recruits who joined the terrorist ranks last year.
