2.50 lakh cases pending in Madhya Pradesh High Court

Nearly 2.50 lakh cases are pending before the Madhya Pradesh High Court, an official said on Wednesday.

Around 2.50 lakh cases are pending in three benches of the state High Court at Jabalpur, Indore and Gwalior, the High Court's Principal Registrar (Judicial) Manohar Mamtani told PTI.

Asked whether the pendency was due to shortage of judges, he said that the total sanctioned strength of judges in the High Court was 53 but right now it is having 30 judges. He felt that the sanctioned strength of the MP HC judges should be increased to 75-80. Mamtani said that the disposal of cases was more than filing of litigations in 2014.

About the pendency of cases in lower courts, he said that it was around 12 lakh comprising 9.30 lakh criminal and 2.76 civil litigations as of July 1 this year. He said that efforts are on to bring down the pendency of cases in lower courts. Cases older than five years have been disposed off in many districts of the state, he added.

About state government's move to hire people to translate the High Court's orders from English to Hindi, Mamtani said that process has been initiated.
