'19 women died in botched tubectomies in Chhatisgarh in 2014'

As many as 19 women died after undergoing sterilisation operation at separate places in Chhattisgarh last year, Health and Family Welfare Minister Amar Agrawal informed the state Assembly here on Monday.

In a written reply to a question raised by senior Congress leader Dhanendra Sahu, Agrawal said while nineteen women died after the procedure in 2014 one death was reported in 2013. As per the reply, the highest number of deaths (13) of women who underwent tubectomies were reported in Bilaspur district followed by two in Balodabazar district while one death was reported each at Durg, Bastar, Rajnandgaon, and Balrampur districts.

The minister said a judicial probe was underway in the Bilaspur sterilisation incident. Thirteen women had died and over a hundred fell ill after undergoing tubectomies in the state-run sterilisation camps in Bilaspur district in November last year.

Giving a break-up, the minister said, 44,271 tubectomies and 1,434 vasectomies were performed at various sterilisation camps and hospitals in 2014-15 in the state while in 2013-14, sterilisation was performed on 1,055,32 women and 3,299 men.
