In a daring daylight heist, two motorcycle-borne assailants gunned down a security guard and robbed Rs1.5 crore from a cash van parked outside an ATM kiosk on Saturday in Kamla Nagar area of north Delhi.

The incident took place at around 11am outside the ATM of Citi Bank, when the officials of a private cash replenishment company were refilling money into the machine. The two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and shot at the security guard, Satyender Singh twice, and managed to flee with a bag carrying Rs1.5 crore. Police suspect role of an organised gang in the robbery which was pulled off in five minutes.

Kamla Nagar area falls near Delhi University's main campus and is largely occupied by students. A mobile footage leaked to media later showed the two robbers brandishing weapons while fleeing from the scene. The duo wore helmets and briefly struggled to get away, when a car brushed past their bike forcing a momentary confusion.

An eyewitness made a call to the police control room and a PCR van arrived at the crime scene and rushed the security guard to a nearby hospital, where he was declared as brought dead.

Police has registered a case of murder, armed robbery and arms act at Roop Nagar police station of north Delhi. The registration number of the motorcycle of the assailants was fake and has been procured on a false ID. Investigators are scanning CCTV footage of many cameras installed on nearby private buildings. A detailed report of the calls from all the local mobile towers is being examined as well.

"We have got some leads and working on them," said a senior police official. Two police teams have been rushed to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana as well to track all the suspect professional robbers and illegal arms trafficking gangs.

As of now police claim that more than two people were involved in the robbery and the assailants may have handed over the cash to their accomplices. However, no arrests were made till late Saturday evening.

Several teams led by the DCP (north), Madhur Verma — under the supervision of Deepak Mishra, special CP (law and order) — are probing the case.

Earlier this week, unidentified men hauled off a Union Bank of India cash machine from west Delhi's Narela and also snatched the CCTV cameras installed in the booth.
