After the state health minister assured the doctors that they will not be responsible for scrutinising documents before approving a surgery, the latter said live related kidney transplants will continue to be conducted in the city.

The city nephrologists and urologists had decided on Friday to not conduct any new live related kidney transplants after five LH Hiranandani Hospital doctors were arrested by the Powai police for their alleged role in the kidney racket. The Nephrologists and urologists associations had demanded the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) agrees to exclude doctors from the process of scrutinising documents.

Nephrologists and urologists associations and the Association of Medical Consultants met with state health minister Dr Deepak Sawant on Saturday and apprised him that the fear has made transplants a difficult task and doctors do not wish to take new cases.

Sawant assured them that their demands will be heard at the earliest. He also appealed to the doctors to take back their statement and continue with live related kidney transplants, and asked for some time to sort out the crisis.

"The doctors' delegation met me and expressed their grievances. We assured them that three department were involved to resolve the issue as soon as possible," said Sawant.

Meanwhile, president of the Mumbai Urological Society Dr Shrikant Badwe said, "We we want the government to pass a GR or an ordinance to absolve us of this onerous responsibility of scrutinising documents. The minister clearly stated that he would take it up with the chief minister and issue a statement within a few days."
