In an emergency case, when a 19-year-old was brought to the Government District Hospital, Anantnag, doctors never expected her to be carrying a 14.4 kg ovarian cyst.

The patient and her family had no inkling that the girl had a huge mass inside her abdomen. The teenager had already been battling a congenital heart disease diagnosed many years ago, thus deflecting timely focus from the problem she was nursing in the recent months.

It was only a month ago that they consulted a private doctor. After certain tests and investigations, the doctor diagnosed a uterine cyst and advised a surgery at a private hospital, which would cost her parents anywhere between Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000.

Poverty coupled with ignorance played its part and the idea of a surgery remain shelved until a few days ago, when she developed intense pain. Her parents took her to the government hospital in Anantnag for the operation. In the operation theatre, doctors were in for a major shock when they found a huge ovarian cyst overlapping other organs inside the uterus.

"The patient was admitted with abdominal distention and pain. Ultrasonography showed a huge cyst. A Contrast Enhanced Computerized Tomography (CECT) scan was conducted which revealed that the huge ovarian cyst was occupying the whole abdomen, pelvis, pushing diaphragm, and heart superiority," Dr Azad Malik, Consultant Surgeon, Government District Hospital, Anantnag, who conducted the surgery, told DNA.

During the 45-minute procedure, a football sized cyst was removed from her abdominal uterine cavity on January 19. "The cyst we removed weighed 14.4 kilogram. The patient was transfused two units of blood. She is better now and we resumed orals on Saturday," said Dr Malik.

Doctors said the girl has a history of congenital heart disease and also suffers from vision impairment. "Due to her heart condition, she developed breathlessness. A cardiologist intervention was also provided. Later, she was shifted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences for cardiology consultation. Doctors have reported that she is fine know and will be discharged in a couple of days", said Dr Malik.

It is not the first time that doctors in Kashmir have reported removing such a huge cyst. In July 2015, doctors pulled off a miracle by removing a 21.5 kg cyst from the womb of 17 year old in the Anantnag district.

Doctors are of the opinion that ignorance, neglect, and lack of awareness in the far flung areas are the main causes that lead to the development of such complications.

"Women tend to feel shy to report these. If a young girl has a pain in her abdomen, she should not feel shy in reporting it to a doctor. Facilities are available at every level. People should come forward," said Dr Malik.
