Sondharva Meena Bhanji understood well how the gift of organ donation can save lives and had pledged her own organs. So when the 44-year-old employee of Mumbai’s Jaslok hospital was declared brain-dead on Tuesday following an intra-cranial bleed, her family donated not one but all her organs- setting an example.

Her heart saved the life of a 46-year-old female from Andheri in Mumbai, liver was retrieved by Mulund’s Global Hospital, and kidney was kept by Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre. It did not end there. Bhanji’s family also donated her skin to the National Burns Centre in Airoli, and eyes were retrieved by Bachuali Eye Hospital in Parel.

“Mumbai needs 1500 skin donations every year, but we get only 480. This is a very philanthropic and noble gesture from the family. Not many people know about skin donation and that it can also save lives of orthopedic patients, or those suffering from bed sores, cancer ulcers, and even diabetics who suffer from ulcers,” said Dr Sunil Keswani, director, National Burns Centre.

The heart saved the life of a 46-year-old recipient from Andheri in Mumbai who was on the waitlist for a month. “The surgery was successful and the patient is now stable,” said Dr Dr Anvay Mulay, Chief of Cardiac Transplant Team at Fortis Hospital, Mulund who conducted the surgery. “It is heartening to see that people have responded so warmly to it. We remain indebted to the donor and to their family,” he added.

It took the donor heart 24 minutes to be transported from Jaslok Hospital to Fortis Hospital in Mulund.
