Cadaver donation gives life to kidney patient on waitlist for 6 months

Mumbai saw its second cadaver donation of 2017 on Thursday

When the family of a 44-year-old brain-dead patient agreed to donate his organs on Thursday​,​ four other patients got a new lease of life. The patient ​died at SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim following a cerebro-vascular stroke. His family agreed to donate his two kidneys, liver and heart.

A 38-year-old woman from the hospital who was on the waiting list for kidneys for the past six months became a recipient. Mumbai has around 3,000 kidney patients on the waiting list.

Speaking about the surgery, Dr Vatsala Trivedi, transplant surgeon said, “The surgery was successful and initial signs show steady recovery of the patient. The patient is under constant observation for next 48 hours.” While the hear​t​ went to a patient at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, one kidney and liver went to two other city hospitals.

This was the first kidney transplant of SL Raheja Hospital.

Kidneys: 2
Heart: 1

2016 had seen 58 cadaveric donations from which 184 organs were harvested.
