10-year-old kid's organs give new life to four people

A 15-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy at Jaslok Hospital got a new lease of life when parents of a 10-year-old child at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital decided to donate his kidneys among other organs. The parents willingly approached the hospital administration for organ donation after he was declared brain dead by the doctors on Saturday.

"The parents don't want the identity of their son to be made public. They were very willing for donation and did not need to be counselled," said Dr Rekha Barot, transplant coordinator at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

In the past one week Mumbai has seen three cadaver donations. "The young kids who received the kidneys are doing fine. They should be able to go back to school in a month or so. I just want to tell the world that organ donation is the way to go," said Dr Shailesh Raina, director of Urology, Neurourology and Renal Transplant at the Jaslok Hospital.

He added, "We got the message about the organs last night following which a team from our hospital went to Ambani Hospital to retrieve the organs. By mid morning on Sunday both the recipients had received the organs." The heart went to a 25-year-old female at the Fortis Hospital while the liver went to a 43-year-old male at the Ambani Hospital.
