Movie: Zubaan

Directed by: Mozez Singh

Starring: Vicky Kaushal, Sarah Jane Dias,  Raghav Chanana, Manish Chaudhari, Meghna Malik

Rating: ***

What it's about:

It's about a boy with killer ambition. Dilsher (Vicky Kaushal) the son of a devotional singer in a gurdwara, living in Gurdaspur, is bullied because he stutters. The boy's life changes after a chance encounter with Gurcharan Sikand (Manish Chaudhari), a man from his village with a rags to riches story. He grows up with a dream, to move to Delhi and work for Gurucharan. He manages to impress his boss and all his dreams are about to come true when he meets Amira (Sarah Jane Dias) and he discovers his true path.

What's good:

First time director Mozez Singh has chosen a simple story, which may not be a crowd pleaser but it's a moving story that will connect with your soul. There's a beautiful sentiment at its heart that you will discover for yourself. It a delicate and brilliantly told story of overcoming your insecurities and embracing your true path. What it lacks in terms of star power it makes up with a unique story by Mozez and Sumit Roy and great acting by Vicky Kaushal. His performance dominates the film whether he is cowering or being cocky. Manish Chaudhari provides brilliant support. The most touching part of the film is the father-son relationship, which is also the crux of the film, as you later realise. Zubaan is a visual treat thanks to Swapnil Sonawane.

What's not:

Zubaan has charm and delight, but it is occasionally moves away from it and tries to become dark and deep  Like the track of Amir's brother. And the angst of Gurcharan's son is also over dramatic.

What to do:

Zubaan is lovingly rendered sweet indie film about the spirit of reinvention. Celebrate it.
