Friday night saw the crème de la crème of the Marathi film, theater and television industry gather at the Bhavan’s College campus to celebrate the achievements of the year gone by at the annual Zee Gaurav Award ceremony organised by Zee Marathi.

Hosted by the squabbling couple of the TV show Eka Lagnachi Doosri Goshta Swapnil Joshi and Mukta Barve, the evening was a celebration for the centenary year of the Indian film industry.

Performances by actors Pooja Sawant, Madhura Velankar, Pushkar Shrotri, Makarand Anaspure, Siddharth Jadhav and others celebrated the years gone by in the industry.

The evening also celebrated the people of the industry with special awards presented to veteran actress Sulochana didi for completing 70 years in the industry and to actor Sachin Pilgaonkar who completed 50 years. “With this award I announce that I will continue to dedicate myself to this industry for the next fifty years,” said Pilgaonkar.

Musical duo Ajay-Atul were felicitated with the ‘Marathi Paul Padte Pudhe’ award for their successful journey into Hindi music with Singham and Agneepath. “Even though we have tasted success in the Hindi industry, the Marathi industry will always be home to us,” they said as they accepted the award from director Mahesh Manjrekar.

Theatre mentor Sudha Karmarkar and legendary director Rajdutt were also felicitated for their contribution to the industry.

Considering 2011 was an interesting year for Marathi cinema with high-budget, critically acclaimed films being presented to the audiences, the award presentations were eagerly awaited.

There was a tough tie between Sujay Dahake’s Shaala and Nitin Desai’s Balgandharva — both period films belonging to distinct genres. While Balgandharva swept give awards including the ones for art direction, costume and best actor, Shaala was proclaimed the best film of the year and bagged six awards.
