Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan is all set to release in about two weeks. The teasers and the trailer have worked their magic on the audience and despite it being a songless film, the buzz around the film is tremendously high.

The Censor Board has cleared the film with a UA certificate already. What about the runtime? Editor Namrata Rao reveals, “It’s a little over two hours long — roughly about two hours 10 minutes. But this is without the end credits that will roll. Especially for Fan, the end credits might be a little longer given that there are so many people working on the film and mainly the VFX team. Usually, all VFX films have longer end-credits and for Fan, people have been working for a year now.”

Now, this also means that it will have a shorter runtime than most of SRK’s recent releases. While Chennai Express clocked in around the two-and-a-half hour mark, Happy New Year was almost three hours long. His last film Dilwale too had a runtime of about 158 minutes. At around 130 minutes (plus the end credits), Fan will be one of SRK’s shorter films.  We spoke to trade analyst Taran Adarsh about the runtime and the certification and he explained how the two will work in the film’s favour at the box office.

BIGGER REACH

Taran Adarsh is quick to explain, “Certification matters a lot. So the U/A certificate also means that the film will have a bigger audience reach for sure. Plus it’s the summer vacations. Despite no songs and a low-key promotion, there has been tremendous hype around the film. Fan isn’t a holiday release but the promos have done the magic and the return of the SRK-YRF combo is enough to get everyone excited.”

MORE SHOWS, MORE REVENUE

The 130-minute runtime is considerably shorter than most other Bolly flicks. Taran reasons, “Shorter runtime only has one advantage. Because of that, a number of shows can be packed in a single day at any multiplex which would only generate more revenue for the producers. Other than that, it does not matter. Whether your film is two or three hours long, if it has good content, it will work at the box office.”

He adds, “The longer the runtime lesser number of shows. In that regard, a shorter run time will help Fan earn more money at the ticket windows for sure.”

OPENING DAY?

When quizzed about the probable opening for the film, Adarsh tells us, “Screen count is not fixed yet. That number will be locked only two days prior to the film’s release. So it’s too early to talk about opening day figures but it should be the biggest of the year till now for sure. We need to see how much it does and that can be gauged only when we know the screen count.”
