Forget the cheery tone of the Archie comic book digests you are used to flipping through, as a kid. The season premiere trailer of Riverdale shows Archie and gang taking a grittier path.

The new show, set to premiere on January 26, 2016, in the US, will follow the lives of the characters in their sophomore year of high school as they try to solve a murder mystery.

The small screen Archie is buff than the speckled boy of comic books. There is a new girl in town, Veronica, who is vying to get the attention of Archie, with Betty still in the picture. There are ambulance sirens, police yellow tape, and thumping dubstep music to make it look far more serious.

According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, executive producer of the show Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said that Riverdale is Archie comic meets Twin Peaks. "It’s definitely Archie, but a little darker, a little more complex and a little weirder than you might remember from the digest you bought at the supermarket," Aguirre-Sacasa said.

The show stars KJ Apa (Archie), Camilla Mendes (Veronica), Cole Sprouse (Jughead), Mädchen Amick (Betty’s mother Alice), Luke Perry (Archie’s father Fred), and Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom).
