Punjabi musicians in England have always made it big in the music world. And DJ Surinder Rattan is one of these musicians who changed the UK bhangra scene with his hit “Tappe” (from “The Lick”) where he fused house music with bhangra. He went on to deliver numerous hits like “Ambersaria”, “Akh Largai” ,” Yaara Dil Dara”, “Dil De De Dil”, “Ik Gal Remix”, “Oh Girl  OMG” and “Has Has”. In fact, BBC's Bobby Friction as the `Best Dance Music Producer’ in the British Asian Music industry!

Now DJ Surinder Rattan has got on board rappers and is collaborating with Illmatik and TRIX. The trio has formed a band with an unusual but funky name called 'Mango Beats'. Mango Beats recently launched their first song titled ‘Akhaan’.

So what is behind the name 'Mango Beats'? DJ Surinder Rattan says, “The name 'Mango Beats' is derived from my household nickname. Surinder is my actual name but everyone calls me mango at home so I decided to use this name for the collective. And I also like mangoes!!!”

Surinder also explains that the UK has contributed a lot to Punjabi music. “I think it's the UK that actually evolved Punjabi music to a different level which transcended across to India. So in the UK it's evolving all the time,” he says.

Punjabi rap is a must-play at practically every top club and it’s gained a lot of traction in Hindi films as well. “I think the high energy it brings it adds the swag of rap. It's become a great combo that works really well in clubs ... And for movies, it's like the spoken word - without singing it can cause emotion. So I think that creates an impact which people enjoy,” explains Surinder.

Punjabi music blends really well with rap and we can expect a lot of songs like this from Mango Beats. “I think it is the rhythm, the beats which is the base for a good rap. So that's why I think it works because hip-hop has the same base,” signs off Surinder.
