Film: Katti Batti

Director: Nikhil Advani

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Imran Khan, Vivaan Bhatena

What's it about:
Katti Batti deals with the aftermath of a bad break up. Bad because, our protagonist Maddy (Imran Khan) struggles to accept the fact that he's been dumped by his quirky and eccentric girlfriend Payal (Kangana Ranaut). The film erratically yoyo's between the present and past, giving us glimpses of what lead up to the break up. We witness the whole courtship period, falling in love and then that big moment leading up to Maddy realising Payal isn't going to be a part of his life. The first half is breezy and easy on the senses, with a few well crafted humorous scenes between Maddy, his best friend and situations leading up to wooing Payal. The story takes a serious turn post interval leading up to a situation where Payal has not only moved on, but is ready to get married to a guy who is her ex-boyfriend's sworn enemy. Does Maddy give up and succumb to destiny's verdict on his love life, or does he take matter into his hands and decide to fight for Payal's love till the very end?

The reviews are already in for Katti Batti which released on Friday and it doesn't look good for one of the most anticipated films in Bollywood

Here are a few excerpts from the top seven:

The Indian Express: Kangana Ranaut, Imran Khan starrer wastes our time most comprehensively and completely

"Can we get people who write dialogues where we do not hear the characters think in English when they are speaking in Hindi? Who says : “woh aagey badh chuki hai”, when you know they mean :” she’s moved on”? Why can’t the character just speak the line in English when we all speak in a Hindi-English-Hinglish mix? Can we get supporting acts that are not so laughable? Can we get, at the very least, a couple that genuinely sparks?"

Deccan Chronicle: Imran, Kangana's 'Katti Batti' is a yawn fest

"Over all Katti Batti does have a few surprises and not all of them are pleasant. The production values are very high, the film is well stylised and a very good looking product on the whole. If you like a string of beautiful visuals with good looking people and don’t care much for a story, then you could try Katti Batti. But don’t say you weren’t warned." Read the interview here.

Hindustan Times: Kangana meets Imran and then they bore us

"Katti Batti fares badly in almost every department and the writing is the worst hit. The characters are shoddily written and it’s difficult to feel for any of the lead actors. The actors look clueless in absence of a coherent story. Consider this dialogue: Agar tumne zyada ungli ki toh taange tod ke haath me de dunga. You see the inconsistency? If not then try speaking this dialogue aloud and you would know the problem. Tushar Kapoor’s stunning cinematography gives some solace though." Read the interview here.

The Hindu: Cut the crap, please!

"After a series of well- written scripts, it is the film that will test the star power of Kangana. Can she pull off a weak script solely on the basis of her performance? She has this amazing quality of making us laugh and cry at will and as Payal she explores her wild side to the hilt. But then she is expected to conform because she is the hero now and the hero always has a back story to justify the transgressions." Read the interview here.

NDTV:

"Imagine you are riding an unruly mare that trots, tossing you about, and then, after nearly two hours and 15 minutes of a tumultuous and awful ride, drops you at your destination, safe and sound. That is exactly what you would experience while watching director Nikhil Advani's Katti Batti. On the face of it, Katti Batti is supposed to be a romantic comedy involving a die-hard romantic and a commitment-phobic girl, at least that's what the trailers promised. But what you get is a potpourri of emotional trajectories offered in a non-linear, confusing and obscure manner." Read the interview here.

Firstpost: Imran Khan tries his best but Kangana Ranaut is let down by a bad script

"Here’s a simple question: If you have an actor who is popular and on top of their game and another who’s struggling to find success, who would be the obvious choice for the star of a film? It seems obvious that one would choose the first. Now let’s rephrase the question: If you have an actress who is popular and on top of her game and an actor who’s struggling, who would be the obvious choice? For director Nikhil Advani, it’s the struggling actor.' Read the interview here.

Catch News: A masterclass in how to waste a spectacular actor

The first half of Katti Batti is ditzy enough and the only reason you sit through the rest of the film is because by now your need to know why Aamir Khan shed tears during this film has reached uncontrollable levels. And the climax (spoiler alert, though it's very hard to, well, spoil this film) bears an uncanny resemblance to Advani's previous outings. Or, let's put it this way: the first half is Salaam Namaste and the second is Kal Ho Naa Ho. (I'd like to mention A Little of Heaven and Sweet November, but why go to Hollywood when we have our own Bollywood films being proudly ripped off?) Read the interview here.
