The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley is set to star and produce the upcoming sci-fi action film Convergence.

The 32-year-old actor, who has teamed up with producer Adam Schroeder for the Crimson Forest Entertainment financed project, said that after playing the heroic 'Stefan Salvatore' on the show, he now wanted to portray a flawed character and his non-protagonist role in the film would show him as a guy who 'pushes things a little too far, and too hard, and produces some scary results', Deadline.com reported.

The movie, the screenplay for which was penned by Jeff Richard, has been described as a college-age ensemble piece in the vein of Flatliners, The Matrix, and Fight Club based on real life 'science fact', and would centre on a group of underground biotech engineers, including an The Massachusetts Institute of Technology student wunderkind, exploring a new technology far beyond their expectations and beyond the limits of human control.

Crimson Forest Entertainment CEO Lim said that they were excited to work with Wesley, adding that they believed the film would resonate with audiences on a globally. China Film Assist and Dadi Digital Cinema Ltd. are also aboard as co-producers on the project, while Justin Begnaud and Jonathan Lim produce with Benjamin Tappan as executive producer.

The filming for the project is anticipated to begin in Shanghai and Atlanta in 2015.
