Meghana Gaonkar clearing the air about the controversy regarding the dubbing of her upcoming film, Charminar.
It is almost a year since she has made an onscreen appearance and the last thing she needed was a controversy involving her and that too just before the release of one of her most anticipated films. But that was how it was meant to be and even before she knew it, the very sorted Kannada actor Meghana Gaonkar had managed to find herself in the middle of a brewing storm.
What we are referring to is a tiff that she had with Chandru, the director of Charminar, regarding the dubbing for the film. The actor on a social networking site commented that she was disappointed over the fact that a dubbing artist was used to give voice to her character while she herself could have done the job. Meghana says that her comment was viewed out of context and hence the issue snowballed into a controversy.
“There was a communication gap between the director and me,” says Meghana. But what really happened, we ask... “Having noticed in the promo that it was not my voice that was used in Charminar, a fan on my social networking site wanted to know if I could speak Kannada at all. In reaction to that remark I responded by saying I am very much a Kannada girl and it is just that my director has decided not to use my voice in this particular film. In this context I said that I was disappointed about my voice not being used. A regional newspaper picked up the message and without even bothering to seek a clarification from me went ahead and published the same and things blew out of proportion,” she says.
Chandru reacted to the article by saying that as a director it was up to him to use a voice that he thought was best suited for the character. “Yes, the director gets to take the final call. It’s just that I was disheartened over the fact that I was not even informed that a dubbing artist was being roped in to give voice to my character. Even after she had dubbed, I requested that I be given an opportunity to dub. Crew members even said that they loved my voice. I was even told that they would be using my voice only. But that didn’t happen and so I was naturally disappointed. But even before Chandru and I could come to an understanding, reports about me being upset and him being dissatisfied with my voice started surfacing and hence this controversy. But now Chandru sir and I have sorted out our issues. So contrary to reports I will still be actively participating in the promotions of the film that is due for a February 8 release,” she says drawing the chapter to a close. Her next project is likely to be a Telugu flick — so here’s us wishing her all the luck!
