Salman Khan's Sultan released on Wednesday and ran to packed houses across the nation. Being the widest release ever, YRF made sure Sultan hit at least 4800 screens in India itself, followed by another additional 1100 screens worldwide. Now, the result is clear. The film has put up a brilliant total but has it managed to pip Prem Ratan Dhan Payo's opening day record? The answer is no.

Last year, PRDP scored around Rs 39 crore on day one, which still remains the highest opener for any Hindi film till date. We aren't considering the producer figures but only distributor figures here. The trend of Sultan has led to the situation where there was a 50-50 chance of the film going either way.

The only question on everyone's minds on Wednesday was— will Sultan cross Rs 40 crore on day one? Trade pundits said it will. The craze around the film has been tremendous and it was almost certain that the film will record the highest ever opening for Bollywood films till date. But the figures are now almost out and Sultan has failed to break PRDP's opening day record.

Sultan raked in Rs 36.54 crore on day one at the box office, according to YRF. Distributors feel the film's collections were affected by the change in the Eid date. The entire Muslim community that Salman usually caters to could not watch the film since Eid happens to be on Thursday. But the big blockbuster bonanza that Sultan is, it will definitely bring in more numbers through the following weekend.

It only fell short by a small margin to PRDP's record. The reason is clear: Eid got shifted to Thursday which is why a large section of the audience - the Muslim community - could not watch the film yet. Salman's Eid offerings are enjoyed by the Muslim community because that's the first thing they get to see after their month-long Ramzan.

Since Muslim centres in Gujarat, CP, Nizam, Berar and UP performed a little below expectations, Sultan's box office performance got affected. As of now, we just have to wait till the official figures are released by the producers now.
