Veteran writer Rumy Jafri (in inset), who was supposed to direct the remake of Shaukeen, has opted out of the film over date issues. The remake of Basu Chatterji’s 1982 sleeper hit Shaukeen starring Akshay Kumar and Nargis Fakhri has been making news since a long time now. Earlier Rohit Roy was to direct the film. Then it changed hands and the directorial baton was handed over to Rumy, who has written several of David Dhawan’s blockbusters over the years. First came the news that Tigmanshu Dhulia was signed in to pen the new screenplay and dialogues. Dhulia broke the news himself to After Hrs when he was scripting the film at the Jim Corbett National Park last month. The latest development now is that Rumy has opted out of the film over date issues.

According to a source from the unit, “The film was supposed to go on floors in October. Based on that, Rumy had given his dates from March 2014 to another project. When Shaukeen was pushed ahead to January 2014, he had no option. Over the last 15 days, the producers and Rumy tried to examine various options. But nothing seemed to work. Rumy has given a commitment to other projects. It was an amicable decision.”

It is still not certain whether Rumy will start his film with Amitabh Bachchan or a brand new subject altogether. When asked about this new development, the writer-director said, “It is very unfortunate that Shaukeen got delayed. All of us tried our best to resolve this date clash but it wasn’t possible. And I had already given my commitment to someone else. I requested the producers of Shaukeen to let me opt out of the film for that reason. They are all my very good friends and I wish them the very best.”

So now, the hunt is on once again for someone to helm this comedy caper. Any guesses?
