Bollywood celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal and others offered condolences to Jnanpith Awardee Girish Karnad, who passed away on Monday morning

Girish Karnad, 81, breathed his last in his Bangalore house on Monday morning. The veteran playwright and actor died due to multiple-organ failure. Apart from his contribution in Hindi cinema and theatre, Karnad also received the highest literary honour Jnanpith Award in the year 1998.
Girish Karnad also left his mark in South Indian cinema, mainly Kannada cinema. He especially got known as the modern playwright in Kannada. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, president Ram Nath Kovind and other top politicians remembered the veteran in their tweets.
Bollywood celebrities too offered condolences to the legend. Sonam Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, Siddharth, Prakash Raj, Shabana Azmi and Vivek Agnihotri are among the few names who paid their tribute to Karnad though their tweets.

Not only the highest award in literature Jnanpith Award, Karnad was also awarded two highly honoured awards - Padma Shri in the year 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1992. He worked in some memorable films like Tiger Zinda Hai, Chalk n Duster, Shivaay, 24, Dheera Rana Vikrama and Hey Ram too. Karnad was also part of the Television show Malgudi Days. The actor played the role of Swami's father in the show.
