Whoever has known Vinod Khanna has ended up being a fan of his flamboyance and attitude towards life. From a ruling superstar in the 70s to one of the warmest veteran actors in the industry, Vinod ji had a lot of goodwill in Bollywood.

But today, Vinod saab breathed his last as he lost the battle with cancer. The actor who was admitted to a South Mumbai hospital for a month, finally succumbed to the deadly disease. He was 70. 

Sons Akshaye Khanna, Rahul Khanna and Sakshi Khanna were by his side along with wife Kavita Khanna. But as the legend departed for the heavenly abode, here are 7 lesser known facts about the evergreen superstar!

1. Khanna started his career as a villain before transitioning in to the list of A-list heroes. His first film was Sunil Dutt's Man Ke Meet where he played the prime antagonist. 

2. He was part of several multiple hero films and ensembles. In fact, his first box office was Parvarish where he and Amitabh Bachchan shared screen space together for the first time. And needless to say, his next film with Big B- Amar Akbar Anthony was a runaway superhit. 

3. He's famous for his role in Qurbani which also starred Feroze Khan. But do you know he was not the first choice for the film? Instead, it was only after Big B turned down the role that Khanna was cast in the film. 

4. Khanna catapulted to superstardom in the 70s and 80s and was also reportedly the second highest paid actor of that time. 

5. He was a terrific method actor. For a role in Mera Gaon Mera Desh, he had genuinely bloodied himself by a belt to get into the skin of the character. 

6. He was the first Hindi film hero who bid adieu to films when he was at his peak. His retirement had left the industry surprised. But he chose spirituality and divorced his wife Geeta, left the country and spend the early '80s gardening for Rajneesh. 

7. But he returned to film after a few years with a bang. His comeback film Insaaf went on to be a huge hit and kept delivering one successful film after the other. But soon, he lost out on his sex appeal and chose character roles in films. 

He will be remembered forever. After all, the industry has lost another star today!
