What the study says?
The study, published in the Journal of Women's Health, says "Fifty Shades" readers are 25 per cent more likely to have a verbally abusive partner, 75 per cent more likely to diet harmfully and 34 per cent more likely to have a partner who exhibits "stalking tendencies." Researchers spoke with 650 women between the ages of 18 and 24 to gain insight for the study. Michigan State University's Professor Amy Bonomi, one of the study's researchers, says the ages interviewed represent the years when most women begin seeking out sexual interactions. The study also notes that readers of the first book alone are 65 per cent more likely to binge drink and 63 per cent more likely to have had more than five sexual partners. However, as noted by the Daily Mail, the study doesn't say whether or not the women had those problems before reading the novels. The books may just attract a certain type of reader.

Escapism v/s relaity
Psychiatrist Anjali Chhabria, says, "I agree with the findings that the novel Fifty Shades Of Grey' fosters a negative and dark side. Certain type of readers may be more attracted to the book, but it doesn't take time for good book or a novel to gain popularity with the masses. The young tend to be more curious and naive, thus getting influenced more easily. Reading a book can also become a trend in the younger generation. The book has definitely in someway promoted the violent side of sexuality, by portraying it a positive and pleasurable manner. It has open the door to a side of love and sexuality which may be unimaginable or unheard or unseen by the mass. By introducing a new side it has created a sense of thrill and excitement which some women would want to adopt to experiment as well as gain popularity. The book focuses of BDSM which stands for Bondage and Discipline-Dominace and Submission-Sadism&Masochism. These qualities signify underlying psychological concerns on the whole and are common in certain kind of personalities or personality disorders which require help from professional. The violent demands can lead to aggressive behaviour and in some cases be the reason for sexual crimes and accidental deaths and sometimes murder. Thus people need to understand that the characters portrayed in the novel may not be stars but can be individuals who suffer from some mental illness."

The study lacks statistics
Seema Hingorrany, clinical psychologist is dismissive about the study. She says, " Contrary to the study's findings, many women who have come up and told me that they read the book, claimed they did so because they didn't have a satisfactory sex life and wanted to enhance it by reading this novel. The readers also the read the book because many things were explicitly written which probably intrigued the readers. Many women said, the book was like their little fantasy world with Mr Grey as there Prince Charming. It tool their minds off from daily stress and pressure."
