The actress made the last phone call to her boyfriend and minutes later, she allegedly hanged herself to death; police give him a clean chit after questioning.
She talked to her boyfriend for barely two minutes. And soon after, she killed herself.
Sooraj Pancholi, the son of actor Aditya Pancholi, was reportedly the last person to hear from Bollywood actress Jiah Khan before she hanged herself while alone at her apartment in Juhu late on Monday.
Based on the call records of Khan’s cellphone as well as three text messages Pancholi sent her around the time of her death, the police questioned him for nearly four hours on Tuesday afternoon. They also recorded the actor’s statement. Investigators, however, claim to have found no evidence to link Pancholi with the alleged suicide.
Sources say Khan, who had been dating Pancholi for a year, had been depressed for the last two months. Her condition allegedly took a turn for the worse when her 22-year-old boyfriend began distancing himself from her a few days ago.
Giving a peak into the last few days of Khan, who began her Bollywood career with Nishabd in 2007, a police source says the 25-year-old actress returned from an audition in Hyderabad on Saturday evening. “She went to Pancholi’s house in Juhu and spent the weekend there.”
Initial investigations reveal that the two called each other up more than 10 times the next day. But some of the text messages the two sent each other show that all wasn’t well in paradise. They repeatedly picked fights over the phone during the day.
When Pancholi failed to respond after one such call, she sent him a text message: “Why are you so cold?” In his reply, Pancholi said, “I was busy with work.” Khan then confronted him with the charge that he was dating someone else.
“During one of the calls, Khan told Pancholi that she had landed a chance to work in three movies, after which he sent her a bouquet of flowers through his domestic help, Deva. That was around 9.15pm,” explains a police officer.
However, during another phone call soon after, Khan and Pancholi began arguing again.
Livid, the actress marched down to her building lobby, handed the watchman her bouquet and told him to get rid of it.
Sources claim that she then went to Pancholi’s house, but he failed to answer her phone calls. Deva reportedly told her that he was busy with his father.
After she returned to her apartment, the two last spoke for about two minutes at 10.53pm. Later, Pancholi sent her three text messages between 11.07pm and 11.22pm, asking her to call him.
Soon after, Khan’s mother arrived home and found her hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom. No suicide note was found. The police suspect that the actress committed suicide between 11pm and 11.30pm.
A police source says the woman who Khan alleged was Pancholi’s new love interest supplies jewellery to the Pancholis.
The last hours
9pm: Sooraj Pancholi sends Jiah Khan a bouquet through his domestic help, Deva.
9.30pm: The two pick a fight; Khan tells her watchman to throw out the bouquet.
10pm: She arrives at Pancholi’s house in Juhu; calls him but he doesn’t respond.
10pm-10.30pm: She calls him up several times.
10.53pm: The two finally talk for 2 minutes.
11.07pm-11.22pm: Pancholi sends her three text messages asking her to call him back.
11.23pm: Khan’s mother arrives home.
