Double roles are passe. Actors are known to play more than one role. And never mind if the audience normally rejects a star, no matter how big, in multiple roles. Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and Ram Kapoor are all cast in triple roles in Sajid Khan's Humshakals.
Here's looking at films where actors have played multiple roles:

Hrithik Roshan in Krissh 3: Hrithik Roshan played not just the twin roles of Krishna and the masked crusader Krissh, but also their dad. If he had his way he would have played the super-villain too.

Priyanka Chopra In What's Your Raashee: She played a whopping 12 characters, one each for every star sign. By the end of the exercise one doesn't know who was more exhausted. Priyanka playing these 12 characters or the audience watching her play them.Priyanka collapsed on the sets .So did the film.

Amitabh Bachchan In Mahaan: At the peak of his career in 1983 the Big B went from the double role in Don and Adaalat to the triple role of father and two sons in S Ramanathan's Mahaan. He had three very beautiful heroines Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi to romance. Yet the film sank without a trace. The film's popular song Jidhar dekhun teri tasveer nazar aati hai (sung by, who else, the Big B) said it all. Too much of the Big B for even the Bachchan –crazy nation. The film tanked.

Govinda In Hadh Kar Di Aapne: Govinda not only played the lead but also every member of the hero's family including father ,mother and sister. The sequence where the late Nirmal Pandey came visiting Govinda's family was a riot of costumes accents and character- impersonations by Govinda. The film didn't work at the boxoffice.

Kamal Haasan in Dsavathaaram: The very versatile Kamal Haasan overdid it this time. He played 10 roles, a record of sorts, including George Bush. Though very get-up was interesting it became a case of too much a good thing.

Mehmood in Humjoli: The scene-stealing comedian was cast as grandfather, father and son. The look accent and body language were inspired by Prithviraj, Raj and Randhir Kapoor. The three generations of Mehmood even did a song about the generation gap Yeh kaisa aaya zamana bete ne baap ki na maani, with Mukesh, Kishore Kumar and Mehmood lending their voices. Kal, aaj and very cool.

Sanjeev Kumar In Naya Din nayi Raat: 9 different roles including that of a leper and an effeminate man, all wonderfully done by the inimitable Sanjeev Kumar. The film became a showcase of the actor's talent. Kahani gaya bhaad mein.
