Mery Streep earned her 19th Oscar nomination this year, making her the most nominated actor in the history of the Academy Awards. Nominated for playing a witch in Into the Woods , Streep bettered her own record of Oscar nominations. Actors Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn, who each have 12 Oscar nominations are the second most-nominated.

In the clip from Into the Woods, Streep showcases her musical skills singing Stay With Me.

Streep's first Oscar recognition came in 1978 for her supporting role in American war drama The Deer Hunter. She went on to win her first Oscar for Kramer vs Kramer  for best supporting actress the following year.  She has also won Oscars for best supporting actress in Sophie's Choice (1982) and for best actress in The Iron Lady (2011).                

Streep has managed to remain an A-list star since the 1960s. Her skills and that 'Streep magic' that translates on screen is what makes her the embodiment of Hollywood's golden girl. It is Streep’s extraordinary versatility and raw talent that has led her to become one of Hollywood’s great  talents.

Streeps variety of roles and dedication to her art has won her several other awards as well, including best actress at Cannes, eight Golden Globe awards, two BAFTAs, two Screen Actors Guild Award and a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for best actress.

In 1979, Kramer vs. Kramer ( Won - best supporting actress), Streep plays a mother in a custody battle with her ex-husband. In an emotional last scene, Streep has a change of heart by putting what is the best interest for her child first.

1982 Sophie's Choice  (Won- best actress) , Streep plays Polish refugee Sophie Zawistowska. The heartbreaking scene depicts her ordeal in a wartime concentration camp, forced to do what no parent should. Streep's character is forced to choose to give up one of her children.

2011 The Iron Lady  ( Won -  best actress) Streep plays the strong controversial figure Margraret Thatcher capturing not only her legacy but the human side of a woman who was ahead of her time.
