He’s got a grouse on his mind and no, it isn’t taking up cudgels with ex-friend Dino Morea who was rumoured to have stolen old flame actor Lara Dutta from him. “I’ve just got into the city and it’s bloody hot,” says Kalden (Kelly) Dorjee. “I can only think of ice. I’m off to film in Hyderabad and then Egypt, so I don’t think it’s going to be a cool summer for me this year.”

Kelly’s back in the city in one of his hop-in-hop-out trips, for the actor who once made Mumbai his home has a lot on his platter back home in Bhutan as well. “I have mostly lived out of a suitcase,” he says, referring to his family, films and biking, with the last year having been especially action-packed! “I finished Lahore last summer, a Bhutanese film that did record business and then spent a lot of time in Hyderabad for a few Telugu films and my first Tamil film, Asal. Last October in Bhutan, I went biking with my cousin from England and some friends. It’s an old passion that I have rekindled. I will soon direct as well in Bhutan, for world cinema. I also am finally negotiating a Hollywood venture on a Buddhist subject for this year,” he informs. That’s a long route for someone who did his first film Auroville 316 way back in 2001 and had a tryst with modeldom. Has that changed the way he views work? “My journey up until now has been less than fruitful in terms of monetary gains and I maintain that I still struggle and go knocking at the entrance to every director’s project when I see something there for me,” he states.

The Bhutanese actor seems to have consciously stayed away from the spotlight — not being seen at every film party over the years. “I am private about who I am because I am seldom myself,” he jests, adding, “I am an actor, I think I’ve been one since I was eight. As for my personality, one of my few concessions to conformity is that I wear clothes. But seriously, I am given to great moments of calm these days, much more than moments of turmoil. I find meditation in almost everything that I do compassionately. It’s like in John Le Carre’s book — Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy — lateralism. I used to move up and down, now I just move along!”

Kelly hardly spoke out — very selectively just once when the Lara-Dino relationship came into the news; has he come to terms with that? “One would think that having to turn around thrice to see what’s hurting you in the back would put anyone off! Let me also say, that if you have to sound correct, Lara took away my old friend Dino from me. I cannot comment on the meaninglessness of nine years because in so many years, one must cease to see the other as an angel and rather the human side of us, be not just acknowledged, but suddenly dealt with without judgment,” he explains.

For the moment family plays the greatest role in his life. He’s not seeing anyone but believes he will find true love. “Maybe settle down someday and have kids too. My passions lie within my compassion.”
