Tamil film Visaranai has been selected as India's official entry for the Academy Awards 2017. The Vetrimaaran directorial movie is adapted from M Chandrakumar's novel titled Lock Up.

Visaranai is a crime thriller that revolves around corruption, police brutality while bringing to light how innocence is lost in the wake of injustice. The jury of the Film Federation of India, headed by Ketan Mehta this year, has selected the film from the 29 entries which included the likes of Udta Punjab, Thithi, Sairat, Neerja, Nil Battey Sannata etc.

As per reports on an online portal, Ketan Mehta said "The jury had seen all the movies that are in competition. Of the 29 films that came up, we have unanimously voted for Vetrimaran's moving saga 'Visaranai'. We believe this would represent our movie best at Oscars."

The 89th Academy Awards are supposed to be held on February 27, 2017 at Los Angeles.
