Six established and emerging talents have been invited to be part of one of the most prestigious fashion trade shows in New York in September

After Dubai and Durban, now it’s New York for Indian designers. This time, they are six in all. A combination of emerging and established designers like Anand Kabra, Anuj Sharma, Nachiket Barve, Nikasha Tawadey, Narendra Kumar and Rakesh Agarvwal have been chosen by the Lakme Fashion Week advisory members to showcase their creations at Coterie.

Nachiket Barve is excited and at the same time a little apprehensive. He says, “It is very challenging to showcase in Coterie. Reason being, it is one of the largest trade shows and exhibitors from all across the globe are present.”

Anand Kabra, who would also be showcasing at the exhibition for the first time, is a little nervous too.

He says, “Fashion all across the world is now speaking one local language, of course with slight regional overtones. But the message is clear. What I understood from the brief given to me was that clothes should be wearable, from the hanger to the body without any major amendments.”

So what will he be showing? “It’s a little early to say that. I am still researching about the market and trends in the US. There would be Indian sensibilities and colours in my creations. But I am not going in as an Indian brand ambassador.”

Nikasha Tawadey is a little clear about what she is showcasing and she says, “I will be showcasing my Spring/Summer 2009 collection and creating about 50 to 60 outfits. The theme of the collection would have prints — some old, some new. They will be more edgy clothes but not very sharp cuts…And definitely nice detailing.” Last season, Nikasha received a lot of applause for her India-inspired creations. So are the firangis in for an Indian flavour? “Of course, I will be taking the theme a  little further. Also, I think what I exhibit is more about my clothes’ philosophy.”

Narendra Kumar Ahmed is also packing his bags. Nari says, “It is the first time, India is being invited at the show. It is a fantastic opportunity to be associated with Coterie. Also, the recall value of India is very high, be it Bollywood, cricket or the economy. The quest for ‘Indianness’ has grabbed international eyeballs.”

Anil Chopra, advisor Lakme says, “We invited Elyse Kroll, producer Coterie to the Lakme Fashion Week. On the last day of the fashion week, the board of advisors and Elyse went through the various designers’ creations and came up with a list. Apart from being a good designer, the criterion for selection was that the creations were appealing to various markets and buyers. This would broaden the horizon of the designers.”
