Tusshar Kapoor (in June 2016) and Karan Johar (earlier this month) might be some of the last few single parents to have children through surrogacy in India. The drafted Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill 2016 passed by the Union Cabinet in August last year is pending approval from the parliamentary committee to be passed into law. When that happens, what it effectively does, is ban single men and women and gay couples from opting for surrogacy.

Smooth sailing

Tusshar’s son Laksshya, a baby born through surrogacy, is now a nine-month-old tot and the star dad says of the experience, “There were no challenges as such, as I was guided by Dr Firuza Parikh. Everything was done legally. She is experienced in these matters and is aware of the legalities thereof. The idea was to get successful with the first child. I think I was destined to do this and have a child.”

‘My choice’

There’s a big surrogacy vs adoption debate on at the moment. And given the fact that the government is expected to pass the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill into law soon, this means he (as well as other single parents) won’t be able to have children through the procedure anymore and will have to veer towards the adoption option. His take on the matter is a straightforward one. He says, “I am completely pro-adoption, but I wanted my own child. Something that I was very clear about and I guess I have a right to that. Those who want to adopt, I feel that’s great. You never know, even I might do that someday, but this time it was just a choice that I made. So, I don’t feel there’s anything to debate.”
