"You're a man," says an amazed Diana Prince in the first few seconds of the Wonder Woman trailer. The princess of Amazons hasn't met one before, having grown up on the isolated island of Themyscira, raised by female warriors.

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is back in the first trailer revealed by Warner Bros at Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con. The studio brought its A game to its marquee event to blow fans away with trailer after trailer in an attempt wipe out all memory of the disastrous Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And it's worked.

As Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot was one of the few bright spots in BVS. In the first look from her standalone film, she's everything you would want from first ever female superhero on the big screen. (Yes, it's 2016 and we've only just begun.) Gadot exudes strength, purpose and curiosity in equal measures.

The footage is a refreshing departure from the signature grimness of the studio's superhero films. While staying on the darker side of the palette, there are splashes of solid colours. Wonder Woman counters the angst and bleakness that reign supreme in Superman and Batman's world with a certain solidity and sense of conviction, not to mention some kickass action. Note the sword nestled in the back of her dress. Bruce, Clarke, you can step aside now.

There's a lot riding on the shoulders of the movie. That this comes from the DC bastion only adds to the pressure of getting its tone right. From what we've seen so far, this one could go a long way in redeeming the DC Cinematic Universe.

Set during World war I, Wonder Woman steps into man's world of conflict against the warning of her mother who tells her " they don't deserve you." The war comes to Wonder Woman's home as we see Amazonian women on horseback fighting soldiers on the shores of Themyscira.

You've already seen her work those cuffs and that shield. Now you get to see the lasso of truth in action.

The film does have a love interest in Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine. But the trailer takes care not let it overshadow the central story of Wonder Woman's journey.

"I can't let you do this," says Trevor in one scene . "What I do is not up to you," comes the reply. Now that's a lasso of truth!

June 2, 2017 cannot get here fast enough.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, and also stars Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright.
