Actor John Cho has revealed that his gay kiss in Star Trek Beyond was cut on the editing table.

Cho, who plays Hikaru Sulu in Justin Lin's follow-up to Star Trek into Darkness, will be shown as the father of a young girl with a same-sex partner in the movie, reported Digital Spy.

"There was a kiss that I think is not there anymore. It wasn't like a make-out session. We're at the airport with our daughter. It was a welcome-home kiss. I'm actually proud of that scene, because it was pretty tough," the actor said.

Screenwriter Doug Jung is playing Sulu's husband and Cho said it was tough for them to do the scene.

"Obviously, I just met the kid, and then Doug is not an actor. I just wanted that to look convincingly intimate. We're two straight guys and had to get to a very loving, intimate place. It was hard to do on the fly. We had to open up. It came off well, in my view," he added.

Cho also said that his character's sexuality "personalised Sulu a little bit".
