Hard to say, 'I am sorry'

Public apologies are common in Hollywood as in the case of actress Reese Witherspoon (who recently apologised after being arrested for disorderly conduct). Here's looking at celebs who have had a brush with the law, and how they dealt with it.

The incident : Actor Salman Khan spent more than a week in  jail in 1998 for hunting two blackbucks during the shoot of a film in 1999. He was the only one sentenced while there were others who were also involved in the case. Fresh charges were read out against actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam by a court in the 14-year-old blackbuck poaching case this year. Chief judicial magistrate Chandrakala Jain read out the charges under sections 9/51 and 9/52 of Wildlife protection Act and 149 of IPC and posted the case for next hearing on April 27.



The aftermath: The actors denied the charges read out to them by the judge.

The incident
:  Last year actor Saif Ali Khan was in the news for a police case following a scuffle with an NRI businessman in a five-star hotel in Mumbai.  A case under section 325 of the IPC was registered against Saif. He was arrested and later released after bail.



The aftermath
:  He later publicly said sorry for the incident. He said, “I think I could have reacted to the incident using ‘Gandhigiri’. But that time the situation was worse. I am not saying that I am totally innocent but I was not guilty alone.”

The incident
: In 2006, actress Katrina Kaif’s first visit to Ajmer Sharif got her into trouble with the dargah management. During a shoot, Katrina had a dupatta on her head but her legs were not properly covered as she had a knee length skirt. Her attire irked the dargah committee who found her costume objectionable and disrespectful vis-à-vis the shrine.



The aftermath: The director Vipul Shah and Katrina later apologised to the the committee at the Ajmer shrine and the matter was settled.

The incident: In 2001, actor Fardeen Khan made news when the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested him in Mumbai on charges of possessing cocaine.



The aftermath: After a long court battle, Fardeen was granted immunity from prosecution in the case on the condition that he will undergo a detoxification process, apparently, which he has already completed.  The actor did express “deep regrets”over his involvement in the drug seizure.

He said in a televised interview, “I’m old enough to know what I’m doing. I broke the law, I got caught, I paid the price for it but now I’ve got to move on.”

The incident
: In 2009, Akshay Kumar, walked the ramp for Levis. During the fashion show, his wife Twinkle unbuttoned his jeans. This led to a brouhaha by the moralists.



The aftermath
: The Khiladi was arrested in an obscenity case and was later released on bail. He apologised saying, “If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments with my actions, I’m sorry because I didn’t mean to.”

The incident
: In 2007, complaints were filed with against Mandira Bedi for wearing a sari with a below-knee print of the national flag during a World Cup show.



The aftermath
:  Bedi apologised, saying, “I had kept this sari especially to wear on the day of the final match but if I have offended anybody’s sentiments, I offer my deep apology. It was inadvertent. I am proud of being an Indian and do not have any intention to show disrespect to the national flag.”
