Inspired by 20-year-old Gurmehar Kaur’s fight for peace, producer Guneet Monga has made a short film, Shut Up, directed by Ashutosh Pathak and starring Arjun Radhakrishnan and Anuritta Jha. The short is a fictionalised account of what happened with the young girl and freedom of speech.

But instead of a girl, Guneet’s film is about the silent protest of a man. Gurmehar had joined the social media campaign against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) when clashes had taken place at Delhi’s Ramjas College and was trolled when she put up a picture of herself on Facebook, holding a placard saying, “Pakistan didn’t kill my father, war did,”.

Her father, Captain Mandeep Singh, died when a Rashtriya Rifles camp came under militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 1999. He lost his life along with six other soldiers while trying to defend the camp.
