True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is working on the third season of the popular HBO anthology series with David Milch.

The duo is said to be in the early stages of writing a possible third season, which has not yet received a series order, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The news of a potential third season comes nearly two years after the polarising second season of the drama, which starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams.

The first season of True Detective earned wide acclaim for Pizzolatto, director Cary Fukunaga and stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

First published in Entertainment Weekly, the reports suggest that Pizzolatto has finished writing at least first two episodes for the possible third edition of the show.

Milch, known for dramas like Deadwood and NYPD Blue is collaborating with Pizzolatto. This does not mean that he will be occupying the showrunner position for HBO show.

According to a report in Variety, HBO and Pizzolatto have a deal which keeps the writer with the network through 2018. He could work on the future instalments of the show or develop new projects. Currently he is working with Robert Downey Jr on developing a Perry Mason series for the network.

Matthew McConaughey, who earned critical and fan acclaims as Rustin Cohle in the first season of the show, has already shown interest in returning to the series if a third season is in works.
