30-year-old Vignesh Shivan (Vicky as he’s popularly called) is extremely nervous and excited about the release of his romantic film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ on October 21. Starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara, the movie has music by Anirudh which has already turned out to be a hit.

Speaking exclusively to dna, director Vignesh Shivan says, “Any film is always special but this movie is very, very special. I love the script and I wanted to see the script on screen. It’s a new effort which is experimental but with commercial elements. I saw the complete film yesterday and really liked it.”
His directorial debut
Shivan’s debut film with Simbu ‘Poda Podi’ didn’t fare well at the box office. “Poda Podi was made in 2008 and should have released in 2009. The movie didn’t come out on time and so it lost its charm. But there were also people who liked it,” he says.
‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ is an emotional story that will also make people laugh. “The challenge was to tell a sad story but in a very happy way. I have the confidence that I achieved this with the film,” states Shivan.
On Nayanthara
Actress Nayathara plays a deaf girl in this film and has even dubbed for herself for the first time. “Nayanthara has put in a lot of effort for this character and was very dedicated when making this movie. She liked the character of Kadambari and has even said that this film is closest to her heart. I wanted her to dub for the film as I felt it would have more impact and she also agreed. She had her own way of approaching dubbing – for instance, in a scene if she had to cry, she used glycerine even while dubbing to get the right emotions,” says Shivan. As for Vijay Sethupathi, the young director says he shares a good friendship and their friendship translated into a good working relationship as well.
On Anirudh
Anirudh and Shivan are good friends too and have worked together earlier. But this is the first time that Anirudh has scored music for his film. Songs like ‘Thangamey’ and ‘Neeyum Naanum’ are already big hits. “I’m more than happy with Anirudh’s music. All the songs are necessary for the movie as they take the story forward. It’s commendable the way Anirudh handled the music. He’s not partial to any film – he gives his best anyone.” Shivan has written the lyrics for five songs including ‘Thangamey’ as he felt he understood the mood of the film better than anyone.
On Dhanush
The director is also all praise for Dhanush and Wunderbar productions. “I am extremely thankful and grateful to Dhanush and Wunderbar Productions. It’s a blessing to work with them because he is a non-interfering producer. Dhanush set up the project and took it to the level where it’s at today. The movie is being released by Lyca,” adds Shivan.
Naanum Rowdy Dhaan
He is quite passionate as he talks about the film and explains that a lot of effort has gone into its making especially by all the actors in the film. “The way all the actors understood their character and the way they performed was wonderful.  After watching the film, I’m blessed and fortunate to have had Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara play the roles of Pandi and Kadambari. I don’t think anyone else could have pulled it off as well.  But even the smaller roles will have an impact on you be it Parthipan or Anandraj. They have done so well,” signs off Shivan.
