Unusually when an Indian actor stars in a Hollywood film, the first thing that undergoes transformation is his or her accent. More often than not, they go out of their way to match their accents with those of their western co-stars. Deepika Padukone feels the Indian accent, like any other accent, should also make an global impact.
Deepika says, "And why not? For years, we have accepted the British and Australian accent, for example. So its high time we accept an Indian accent." Deepika has delivered her dialogues in her 'natural Indian accent' in her debut Hollywood Venture, which also stars Vin Diesel. But there's a huge reason behind the same.
She further adds, "I play an Indian girl in the film, and for me it's a matter of great pride that I get to be myself. That is one of the aspects that drew me to the script and attracted me to do this film, the fact that for once, I was allowed to be myself is fantastic. I was allowed to flaunt that I am Indian."
But Deepika admits that accents "will happen on project-to-project basis or role-to-role basis". Deepika further said, "Of course such things (accents) matter, but this one particular film and role gave me an opportunity to be proud of who i am and where i come from. Why wont I make most of it?"
We wonder if all this is a sly dig at Priyanka Chopra who is making waves in the West with her brilliant protrayal of Alex Parrish in Quantico and is all set to play the prime nemesis in Baywatch. Why we say so? PC's accent has been the talk of the town ever since she's moved to the West to complete her work commitments. While many have criticised her for her changed accent on talks shows, many have even supported her.
On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut had recently taken a jibe at Deepika and Priyanka and said that she doesn't need to fake her accents like many others do when they go to the West. It was a clear hint that she meant it for Priyanka and more for Deepika, given the bone of contention that exists between the two. So we wonder if this is just Deepika's polite way of answering back to Kangs!
