A bunch of Bengalis are threatening to take over the city! But what these few good men and women plan to do is to tickle your funny bone with 11 short comic sketches. Kolkata-based group Theatrician will perform The Comedy Kitchen — an evening of short comic sketches, some original, some adapted, all hilarious. While the show is directed by Dhruv Mookerji and produced by Tathagata Chowdhury, the cast includes actors from the youth theatre scene in Kolkata.

The play was first performed in the City of Joy in 2013, and has had many shows since then. While The Comedy Kitchen has been performed in Mumbai earlier, the current sketches are all new, informs Tathagata. “There is a strong Bengali theme running through all the sketches, in the way the actors are attired, to the diction they use and the manner in which they will be conducting themselves,” he says. There are some original pieces devised by Dhruv and some adaptations from sketch comedy greats like Monty Python, Mr Bean and the Two Ronnies to a uniquely Kolkata context tailored to a Mumbai audience, also by Dhruv.  And why The Comedy Kitchen? “It’s a buffet spread of all kinds of comedies that you’d like to watch,” Tathagata laughs.

The Comedy Kitchen at Canvas Laugh Club, Lower Parel at 6 pm.
